Whether you’re a fan of traditional Nasi Lemak or looking to try it for the first time, Ponggol Nasi Lemak delivers an unforgettable taste of Singapore.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak was started in 1979 by Mr Ang Chye Choon and Madam Koh Ah Tan delivering pre-packed nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf to hawker stalls.

Today, Ponggol Nasi Lemak boasts 3 outlets in Singapore including Jalan Besar, Capitol Building and Tanjong Katong Road. We have been to the Tanjong Katong outlet many times as it is the most convenient location for us.

Ponggol Nasi Lemak @ Tanjong Katong opens its doors at 4.30pm and it is common to see a queue during dinner time as its the most popular eatery along the Tanjong Katong stretch. The tables are usually all occupied if you reach there at 7pm.

What Makes Ponggol Nasi Lemak Special?

  1. Signature Coconut Rice
The foundation of any great Nasi Lemak is the rice, and Ponggol’s version is exceptional. Cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves, the rice is fragrant, fluffy, and slightly sweet—a perfect complement to the savory sides.
  2. Crispy Fried Chicken
The star of the show is undoubtedly their crispy fried chicken. Fried to a golden crisp, the chicken is juicy on the inside and delightfully crunchy on the outside. It’s no wonder this dish has become a crowd favourite.
  3. Sambal
No Nasi Lemak is complete without sambal, and Ponggol’s version is a game-changer. Their homemade sambal is mildly spicy and slightly sweet, adding flavour to every bite.
  4. Good Size Portions
Ponggol Nasi Lemak is known for its hearty portions, ensuring you get great value for your money. Whether you opt for the classic set or add extras like fried fish or otah, you’ll leave satisfied.

On a Sunday evening when the drizzle had just stopped, we quickly joined the queue which moved fast as the workers were bustling away. They are well organised as the ingredients were replenished quickly especially the chicken wings. What is also fantastic is the staff had their hair in hair nets and they wear face masks, a sight that you would see in Din Tai Fung.

We decided to do a takeaway as we usually do and within 3 minutes of ordering, we got our 3 packets of nasi lemak. Our favourites to get are the ikan bilis, long beans, brinjal, chili dried shrimp and definitely chicken wings. The other item we always get is achar, which we eat it on its own for a snack.

I can safely say that every component in the nasi lemak was executed well. The jasmine rice infused with rich coconut milk and pandan leaves, was fluffy, aromatic and the rice grains were nicely separated and not clumped together. The spicy sweet sambal (not in photo) loaded with grounded dried shrimps provided the umami kick. You can just pair the sambal with the rice alone, its just that good.

The dried shrimp chili was a delight as you get the texture of the crispy dried shrimps in it. The chicken wing was still warm after a 10 minute journey home, the exterior is fried to a crisp and it maintained the juiciness within it.

The achar is one of the essential items to buy and in a big portion. Achar is an Asian pickle that is sweet, sour and spicy at the same time. The thin silvers of cucumber, pineapples chunks, crushed peanuts and sesame seeds drenched with a spicy tangy sauce.
