Da Dong Prawn Noodles in Joo Chiat: One of Singapore’s Best Prawn Mee?

When it comes to prawn noodles in Singapore, Da Dong is often one of the favourites among Easties. Tucked in the heart of Joo Chiat, the stall is located in an inconspicuous coffee shop and it consistently draws long queues. We were here on a rainy day around 11.45am and there was no queue in sight, might be quieter due to the June school holiday break.

The star here is undoubtedly the prawn soup. The broth hits you with an umami-packed punch – robust and brimming with crustacean essence. You can tell it was lovingly simmered for hours and they only give a small bowl of soup. Today’s soup was on the saltier side though

Left – $5 bowl for the kiddo / Right – $8 bowl

Choose between the classic yellow noodles or bee hoon, and top it off with your preferred combo – prawns or prawn with pork ribs combo. The prawns were halved and de-shelled, but the prawns were quite ordinary. The pork ribs come in small chunks and are quite tender. For spice lovers, you can add more chili powder and fresh chili for a fiery kick that elevates the dish even further.

$8 bowl

If you opt for the dry version, you’ll be treated to a bowl of noodles tossed with chili and vinegary ketchup with a spoonful of pork lard, fried shallots and kang kong. We always prefer the dry version of prawn noodles but at Da Dong, the soup version might be the way to go.
