Petit Pain: Singapore’s Artisanal Bakes at Joo Chiat

Petit Pain: Singapore’s Artisanal Bakes at Joo Chiat

For those who appreciate the beauty of slow fermentation and handcrafted pastries, Petit Pain is a name that often comes up whenever my wife and I crave for some good bread. This small, unassuming bakery in Joo Chiat has earned a loyal following, with queues forming well before opening hours for a taste of their signature bakes.

Everything was almost wiped out, pre-order your bakes early!

The Philosophy Behind Petit Pain

Unlike commercial bakeries that churn out loaves in bulk, Petit Pain takes a slow and thoughtful approach to bread-making. The husband-and-wife duo behind this bakery believe in small-batch production, long fermentation, and using high-quality ingredients to achieve a depth of flavor that’s rare in today’s fast-paced world.

With no preservatives, artificial enhancers, or shortcuts, every item on the menu is baked fresh daily and sells out within hours—so arriving early is highly recommended!

What to Try at Petit Pain

  1. Sourdough Bread
Petit Pain’s classic sourdough loaves are the heart and soul of the bakery. They boast a perfectly crisp crust and an airy, chewy interior with a balanced tanginess. It’s the kind of bread that needs nothing more than a good smear of butter to shine.
  2. Kouign-Amann
Their kouign-amann is one of the best in Singapore, featuring buttery, caramelized layers of flaky pastry that shatter with each bite. It’s indulgent but not overly sweet, making it a must-try for pastry lovers.
  3. Croissants & Pain au Chocolat
If you love classic French viennoiseries, Petit Pain’s croissants and pain au chocolat are exemplary. With a shatteringly crisp exterior and beautifully laminated layers, they showcase the bakery’s technical expertise and commitment to quality.
  4. Our favourites are the Shiitake Flatbread (not available on their menu anymore after they shifted location) and the Ciabatta. Shiitake Flatbread – This savoury delight features a generous topping of shiitake mushrooms, onions and melted cheese on a soft, airy flatbread. The mushrooms remain juicy and flavourful, adding an earthy richness to every bite. The combination of textures—from the crisped edges of the bread to the tender, umami-packed mushrooms—makes for a satisfying and well-balanced treat. Ciabatta – Fresh out of the oven, this classic Italian bread boasts a crisp, golden crust that gives way to a soft, pillowy interior. Lightly salted, it carries a subtle depth of flavour, making it perfect for pairing with olive oil, butter, or your favourite spread. The airy crumb structure ensures a delightful chew with each bite.

A Bakery Worth the Hype? Absolutely.

Petit Pain doesn’t just sell bread—it delivers a labor of love in every loaf and pastry. The small-batch philosophy means that once they sell out for the day, that’s it—no mass production, no second rounds. This makes each visit a special experience, and each bite even more satisfying.

If you’re looking for artisanal bread done right, Petit Pain is a spot you can’t miss. Just be sure to get there early, because good things never last long!
