Happy Crab Geylang Review: A Unique Grilled Crab Experience You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Happy Crab Geylang Review: A Unique Grilled Crab Experience You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

When it comes to crab in Singapore, names like Jumbo Seafood, Long Beach and Melben usually dominate the conversation. But tucked away along Geylang Road is a seafood gem that offers something completely different.

Instead of serving crabs drenched in chilli or black pepper sauce, Happy Crab specialises in grilled Sri Lankan roe crabs, allowing the natural sweetness of the crab meat to take centre stage. It’s a simple concept, but one that has earned the restaurant a loyal following among seafood lovers. With many positive reviews, it’s easy to see why many regulars keep returning.

Signature Grilled Crabs

The restaurant’s signature dish is undoubtedly the Grilled Black Pepper Sri Lankan Roe Crab.

The crabs are selected for their generous roe, which adds an extra layer of richness and creaminess to every bite. Unlike heavily sauced versions elsewhere, the grilled preparation allows you to fully appreciate the sweetness of the crab meat.

The black pepper seasoning provides just enough spice without masking the seafood’s natural flavour.

Every bite is juicy, sweet and slightly smoky from the grill. The crabs are grilled over an electric bbq grill, allowing the natural sweetness of the meat to shine through, complemented by the black pepper seasoning. Each crab is meticulously prepared to ensure a succulent and flavourful experience.

Menu Highlights

  • Grilled Black Pepper Crab: A signature dish featuring crabs grilled with black pepper sauce lathered on it towards the end of the grilling.
  • Garlic Butter Crab: A new addition, offering a creamy and fragrant twist to the traditional grilled crab.
  • Grilled Scallops: Succulent scallops grilled to perfection, providing a delightful seafood alternative.

Each dish is served with a selection of dipping sauces, including wasabi, sambal belacan (similar to those used for cockles), and Japanese mayo, enhancing the overall dining experience.

We have ordered a few times from Happy Crab and our favourite is the black pepper crab and it goes well with the spicy sambal belacan dip. With grilled crabs, the sweetness of the crab meat is more pronounced and the smokiness adds another dimension to the flavour.

Our own takeaway of black pepper roe crab

This is not your fancy chili or black pepper crabs in a seaside restaurant setting but simply crabs with roe or tomalley that are grilled to accentuate the sweet and umami natural goodness of crab meat.

Freshness Is the Star

Unlike many seafood restaurants that rely heavily on sauces, Happy Crab lets the quality of its ingredients do the talking.

The crabs are fresh, meaty and packed with roe. Because they’re grilled instead of stir-fried, you can truly appreciate the firm texture and natural sweetness of the crab meat.

It’s a refreshing change from the usual chilli crab experience.

Simple Dining, Serious Seafood

Don’t expect a luxurious seafood restaurant with waterfront views.

Happy Crab keeps things simple with a casual, no-frills setting along Geylang Road. The focus here is entirely on the food, and that’s exactly what keeps customers coming back. If you prefer female roe crabs, do remember to pre-order them with the owner in advance as it’s not always available.
