Oriental Kopi – Authentic Malaysian Kopitiam Flavours

Oriental Kopi – Authentic Malaysian Kopitiam Flavours

If you’re searching for authentic Malaysian kopitiam (coffee shop) flavours in Johor, Oriental Kopi is a nostalgic gem worth visiting. Specialising in traditional breakfast sets, hearty rice dishes, and aromatic coffee, this eatery brings the comforting taste of Malaysia right to your table. We have visited two of their outlets thus far – there is always a long queue for breakfast and lunch at their outlet in Midvalley South Key Mall while the outlet at Paradigm Mall has a shorter queue.

Oriental Kopi offers a casual, old-school kopitiam vibe – think marble-top tables, vintage posters, and the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It’s perfect for a quick breakfast, lunch, or a laid-back teatime break.

Must-Try Dishes

  1. Kaya Butter Toast with Soft-Boiled Eggs
    • The classic Malaysian breakfast combo done right—crispy toasted bread slathered with fragrant kaya (coconut jam) and a slab of butter.
    • Pair it with their soft-boiled eggs (perfectly runny) and a dash of soy sauce & white pepper.
  2. Nasi Lemak
    • A solid rendition of Malaysia’s national dish—fragrant coconut rice served with crispy ikan bilis (anchovies), roasted peanuts, sambal, and a fried egg.
    • Upgrade to the Nasi Lemak Fried Chicken for an extra indulgent meal.
  3. Egg Tarts
    • Touted as the best selling egg tart in Malaysia by volume
    • Flaky crust with a custardy egg filling
  4. Kopi & Teh Tarik
    • Their Kopi (Malaysian-style coffee) is rich and aromatic, while the Teh Tarik (pulled tea) is creamy and perfectly sweetened.

What We Loved

✅ Authentic flavours – Tastes just like a traditional Malaysian kopitiam
✅ Quick service – Great for a fast meal during lunch breaks
✅ Comforting breakfast sets – Ideal for kaya toast lovers

Oriental Kopi delivers solid, no-frills Malaysian kopitiam fare at reasonable prices. While it may not be the most gourmet experience, it’s a great spot for a quick, satisfying taste of Malaysia. It’s easy to tell why it is a crowd favourite. And if you like kaya toast, we recommend you get a bottle of their kaya as it’s a really good kaya jam.
