Korat Thai Cafe Orchard Towers: Craving For Tom Yum Mama Satisfied

Korat Thai Cafe Orchard Towers: Craving For Tom Yum Mama Satisfied

Hidden in the unassuming Orchard Towers, Korat Thai Cafe is a well-loved gem among locals and Thai food enthusiasts. Known for its authentic, no-frills Thai cuisine, this late-night eatery serves up classic dishes packed with bold flavors, all at wallet-friendly prices. If you’re looking for an alternative to pricier Thai restaurants in Singapore, Korat Thai Café is a great bet.

The ownership was bought over by the radio deejays, The Muttons, sometime in 2023 and the good news is that the chef will continue with the new owners, ensuring customers will get to enjoy the same good food it is known for.

The Ambience

This isn’t a fancy spot, but that’s part of its charm. The small, casual eatery is reminiscent of street-side Thai restaurants—simple, slightly cramped, but always bustling with hungry diners. It’s especially popular at night, drawing in both locals and expatriates craving a taste of Bangkok in the heart of Orchard Road.

Must-Try Dishes

Grilled Pork Neck (Kor Moo Yang) – A standout dish, the pork neck is tender, smoky, and beautifully caramelized, with just the right amount of fat for a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Dip it into the accompanying spicy, tangy nam jim jaew sauce, and you’ll see why it’s a crowd favorite.

Tom Yum Soup – Served in a traditional hotpot, this tom yum is aromatic, spicy, and full of seafood goodness. The balance of lemongrass, lime, and chili hits all the right notes, making it comforting yet fiery.

Pad Kra Pao (Basil Minced Pork with Rice & Egg) – A classic Thai street food staple, Korat Thai’s version comes with a generous portion of minced pork, stir-fried with basil, garlic, and chilies. The runny fried egg on top ties everything together perfectly.

Green Curry Chicken – Rich, creamy, and packed with fragrant Thai herbs, this dish is best paired with steaming jasmine rice. The tender chicken pieces soak up the flavors beautifully.

Som Tam (Papaya Salad) – For a refreshing side, the spicy, tangy papaya salad is a must. It’s crunchy, zesty, and loaded with flavors of fish sauce, lime, and dried shrimp.

Korat Thai Cafe at Orchard Towers, Singapore

The missus had a craving for Tom Yum Mama when saw the famous Jeh O Chula Tom Yum Mama on Instagram. Our pot of Tom Yum Mama was served around 15 minutes later and it came chockfull of ingredients. We understand that the tom yum soup base is home made and it was sour, tangy and not too spicy.

Among the ingredients, the one that we enjoyed the most was the sio bak (roast pork) as the prawns and squid were frozen seafood. The portion was good for 2 pax and this would be several notches above your regular tom yum instant noodles.
