Fung Yi Delights Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee Review: Best in The East?

Fung Yi Delights Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee Review: Best in The East?

Fung Yi Delights has built quite a following among Hokkien Mee enthusiasts with many diners praising it as one of the better plates available in Singapore. Naturally, expectations were high when I finally made my way down to try it.

After having it for the first time, my overall impression was that it was decent, but perhaps a little overhyped.

2 Takeaway Portions of Hokkien Mee

The first thing I noticed was that the Hokkien Mee leaned towards the lighter side. The broth coating the noodles was not particularly rich or robust, and more importantly, I found the wok hei rather muted. For a dish where smoky wok fragrance often elevates the entire experience, the lack of that charred aroma made the noodles feel less memorable than I had hoped.

That said, the dish wasn’t without its strengths.

The ingredients were undeniably fresh. There were 4 decent sized prawns for a $10 portion, strips of pork belly meat and pieces of squid that complemented the noodles well. One standout component was the pork lard. Generous portions of crispy lard were scattered throughout the dish, adding crunch, fragrance and richness to every mouthful.

The chilli also helped to bring the flavours together, giving the noodles an extra punch when mixed in.

While I can appreciate why some diners enjoy Fung Yi Delights’ lighter interpretation of Hokkien Mee, I personally prefer versions with a stronger prawn stock flavour and more pronounced wok hei. As a result, this plate didn’t quite live up to the lofty expectations that had been set beforehand.

Would I return? Possibly, if I’m in the area and craving a lighter style of Hokkien Mee. However, if you’re someone who prioritises good wok hei and rich prawn stock flavours, you may find yourself wanting a little more.

Pros:
• Fresh ingredients
• Generous crispy pork lard
• Balanced and approachable flavours

Cons:
• Lacked wok hei
• Broth was on the lighter side
• Didn’t quite justify the hype for me

Final Verdict:
A competent plate of Hokkien Mee with fresh ingredients and excellent pork lard, but one that falls short if you’re seeking the smoky wok hei and rich prawn flavour that define the very best versions of the dish.
