If there’s one thing that captures the heart of Taiwan’s breakfast culture, it’s soya milk, dough stick and egg pan cake. We went to one of Taipei’s local institution, Yong He Soya Milk (永和豆漿), a no-frills eatery serving classic Taiwanese breakfast staples in the morning and for late night supper.
It was a drizzling weekday morning and there was no queue in sight. The interior of the eatery was almost filled and we chose to sit outside to enjoy the cool 25C weather.

What We Ordered
1. Fresh Hot Soy Milk (熱豆漿)
This is the star of the show. Light, fragrant, and sweet, Yong He’s soy milk is freshly made, with almost no artificial aftertaste you get elsewhere. We also ordered the savoury version (鹹豆漿), which comes curdled with vinegar, pickled radish, and bits of dough fritter for a unique, umami-laced texture. It was our first time trying the savoury version but it was pretty good.

2. Dan Bing with Egg (蛋餅)
Flaky pancake with egg and pork floss. The contrast between the savoury thin layer of pancake with the pan fried egg and slightly sweet pork floss makes for a satisfying breakfast.

3. You Tiao (油條)
Golden and crunchy on the outside, airy and kind of empty on the inside, fried dough sticks are made for dipping into soy milk.
It’s fast and nostalgic, serving up the kind of breakfast that Taiwanese locals have grown up with. If you’re visiting Taipei, this is a probably try if you are nearby, whether you’re there for the early morning buzz or the post-midnight crowd.
