Jinan Beef Noodles Taipei Review: Underrated Niu Rou Mian Near Zhongxiao Xinsheng MRT

Taipei is home to countless beef noodle shops – from Michelin Bib Gourmand spots to hole-in-the-wall institutions. But if you’re looking for a satisfying, under-the-radar bowl, Jinan Beef Noodles (濟南牛肉專賣店) near Zhongxiao Xinsheng MRT is a quiet standout.

Popular with locals and tourists alike, this shop doesn’t shout for attention and it can probably seat around 20 pax at maximum capacity. We were there on a Monday afternoon around 2pm and there was a short line of 6 pax in front of us. The couple in front of us were from Hong Kong.

Braised Beef Noodles (紅燒牛肉麵)

The broth is deep and robust. It’s not too oily, and the flavours feel balanced and clean, making it easy to finish every drop. The beef is chunky and tender, often served in generous cuts of shank or brisket. It’s been braised until buttery, with enough connective tissue to offer richness but not too much fat to overwhelm. The beef was more tender than the regular beef bowl.

Half Tendon Half Beef Noodles (半筋半肉牛肉麵)

This bowl had generous chunks of beef that were tender but slightly below par as compared to the braised beef. The beef tendon is soft and gelatinous, the way it is supposed to be cooked.

The Noodles

You get to choose thick or thin noodles and we went with the thin noodles this time. The noodles were springy and chewy. Add a bit of chili oil and pickled mustard greens (酸菜) from the side table, and you’ve got a bowl that’s warm, full-bodied, and satisfying from start to finish.

Optional Add-Ons

You can also order:

  • Braised Egg (滷蛋) – a staple in braised meats although not common in beef noodles
  • Tofu or kelp side dishes – light, refreshing, and great palate cleansers
  • Century egg – for creamy yolk with drizzle of braised gravy

Although the space is small and tight, the lady boss was friendly and did not rush any customer to finish up even though there was a constant queue outside. You can skip the optional sides unless you’re craving something simple to balance the meal.
