Fuhang Soy Milk (阜杭豆漿) Review – The Most Popular Traditional Breakfast in Taipei

No visit to Taipei is complete without breakfast at Fuhang Soy Milk (阜杭豆漿) – a name that has become almost synonymous with traditional Taiwanese breakfast done right. Fuhang has been established since 1958 and is arguably the most popular breakfast spot in Taiwan. Located on the second floor of Huashan Market near Shandao Temple MRT, this breakfast institution serves soy milk, egg-stuffed flatbreads and golden dough fritters to locals and tourists for decades.

We took a 9 minute stroll from our hotel and reached there around 8.30am. The queue was wrapped around one corner of the building, we thought it might take 45 minutes but to our surprise the queue moved fairly quickly and we got our order in just 20 minutes. Yes, the queue can be much longer at times. But is it worth it?

Fuhang Soy Milk has received several Michelin Bib Gourmand mentions over the past few years
Staff baking the flatbread in the traditional oven
The staff hard at work preparing and frying the Chinese dough stick (You Tiao) and packing the flatbread
You order, collect and pay at the same counter

What We Ordered

  1. Warm Soy Milk – This is made fresh daily and the soy milk has a thick, silky texture and is not overly sweetened
  2. Salty Soy Milk – This had a nice savoury taste, slightly less saltier and more palatable than Yong He’s. It is seasoned with vinegar, pickles, dried shrimp bits and topped with spring onions and crumbled dough fritters
  3. Sesame Flat Bread with Scrambled Egg – The bread was quite thick and it is a good breakfast item to fill up you up
  4. Egg Pancake – A lighter breakfast item, the egg pancake had a chewy bite but otherwise quite bland
  5. Deep Fried Chinese Dough Stick – Crispy, oily and hollow in the centre

You should visit Fuhang Soy Milk (阜杭豆漿) if you want to experience Taiwan’s breakfast culture. If the queue gets too insane, you can try other alternatives such as Yong He Soya Milk. Is it worth the queue? I would say yes if the queue is not more than 30 minutes.
