If you’re a fan of naturally leavened sourdough, decadent pastries, and handcrafted desserts, Desem Dessert is a must-visit. Tucked away in the Central Business District (CBD) of Singapore, this bakery has gained a cult following for its slow-fermented breads and innovative desserts—but is it worth the hype? Here’s my honest review.
It was previously known as Desem Bakery located in West Coast at Jalan Mas Puteh, along the same stretch as W39 Bistro and Bakery. As it was a small team helmed by the husband and wife couple, their bakes were usually pre-ordered by regulars and were sold out quickly. We particuarly loved their Sourdough Cream Cheese with Roasted Garlic Bread and Pink Salt Charcoal Butter Roll. The butter roll had a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy yet hollow interior smattered with melted butter.
Using premium ingredients such as French Lescure Butter, French and Japanese Flour, the prices are on the higher side but the quality shines through in the bakes.

In its current location, Desem Dessert offers a wide selection of scones and madeleines and the flavours change from time to time. With their dedication to perfecting their craft, every bake is made with utmost care.
The scones with house made jam are my personal favourite, buttery and crumbly and complemented so well with the jam. The savoury cheddar scallion scone was also uniquely good and was a twist to the typical scone I had in mind, which was to pair it with clotted cream and jam.
Desem Dessert is a rare find—a place where bread and pastries are treated with equal reverence.
