Introduction to Baliban Braised Duck
Nestled in the heart of Skudai, Johor Bahru, Baliban Braised Duck (八哩半卤鸭) is a third-generation eatery that has been serving authentic Teochew-style braised duck since 1973. Located at 1 Jalan Kilang Nenas, Skudai, Malaysia (Postal Code: 81300), this open-air kopitiam is a local favourite, drawing foodies from Johor and Singapore alike. Known for its braised duck, flavourful, tender pork trotters, and unique offerings like braised duck blood, Baliban can get quite crowded during lunch hours. We went there on a weekday afternoon using Waze maps for navigation.

Ambiance and Setting
Stepping into Baliban Braised Duck feels like a nostalgic journey back to kampong days. The open-air dining area, shaded by a massive tree and zinc roof, offers a rustic, airy vibe. The setting is clean and unpretentious, perfect for a casual meal. Parking is quite ample along the street or at the compound opposite Baliban, the laid-back, old-school charm adds to the authentic experience, making it a standout in Johor Bahru’s food scene.
Braised Duck
The Braised Duck is available as a whole or half portion. The duck is deboned and sliced thinly and drizzled with the braised gravy for a more robust flavour profile. We wished that the slices of duck meat could be thicker to enhance the taste of the duck. Accompany it with steamed rice or kway teow soup for a complete meal. We got the half duck portion and it looked quite substantial.

The Star Dish: Braised Pork Trotters
Surprisingly, the Braised Pork Trotters stole the spotlight from the braised duck. Slow-cooked for hours, the trotters were melt-in-the-mouth tender, with a slight hint of spiciness from the dried chili in a sticky umami gravy that balanced fattiness and seasoning. The gelatinous skin topped with gravy and some rice is the perfect combination. We got 2 portions of the half braised pork trotters just in case 1 portion was not sufficient and indeed it was not enough.

Other Highlights
- Braised Intestines: Cleaned thoroughly with a smooth texture
- Braised Beancurd Skin (Tau Kee): Soaked in herbal sauce
- Kway Teow Soup: Chewy flat rice noodles in a rich, herbal broth
- Braised Egg: A classic side, adding depth to the meal
- Chili: A fiery red colour but mild and slightly tangy
Why Baliban Braised Duck Stands Out
Baliban’s commitment to tradition sets it apart. The recipes, passed down through three generations, use a secret blend of herbs and spices, ensuring authenticity in every dish. The lack of gaminess in the offals reflects meticulous preparation, while the friendly service from Mr. Quek adds a personal touch. If you just want to try one item, our recommendation is to try the braised pork trotters.
