Siyuan Desserts (思源糖水铺) Review: Traditional Chinese Sweets with a Modern Touch

Tucked away in the sleepy industrial vibe in the Jalan Besar neighbourhood, Siyuan Desserts (思源糖水铺) brings a modern touch to traditional desserts. They serve classic Chinese desserts (糖水) that feel like its made with honesty. With a focus on traditional recipes, natural ingredients, and delicate flavours, Siyuan is fast becoming a local favourite among those who crave comfort in a bowl.

Upon stepping in, the cafe’s interior exude a zen Chinese vibe, almost like entering into a teahouse.

Cheng Tng (清汤)

A crowd favourite – light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. The longan, barley, white fungus and peach gum are perfectly balanced, with just the right flavours melded together. It’s especially soothing on a hot day.

Pulut Hitam (Black Glutinous Rice Pudding with Coconut Cream)

Their Pulut Hitam is not overly sweet and it comes with 4 pieces of lychees, which is rare to find as I don’t see it served this way elsewhere. Add in the coconut cream and you get a nice traditional bowl of dessert just like how grandma would prepare it.

2-in-1 Walnut and Black Sesame Paste

You can choose to add in your favourite flavours without overeating. We choose walnut and black sesame and finished each cream individually.

3 Mini Bowls of Almond Cream, Sesame Paste and Walnut Cream

I thought this was a brilliant sampler idea as not many would have tried these different flavours before, at least for me. I have not tried walnut cream prior to this and it was a pleasant surprise as the taste was familiar, almost like lotus paste. The 3 flavours had the perfect consistency and they weren’t overly sweet at all.

Siyuan Desserts 3

Siyuan keeps it affordable, with most desserts priced between $4.20 to $6. Portions are just right, enough to satisfy without overwhelming, making it perfect for an after-meal treat. The clean and air-conditioned environment made the dine-in experience a pleasant one.
