We were craving for ramen and I just did a quick Google search and saw this ramen place actually had an average rating of 4.7 stars on Google. Like how did we miss this at all? However after we tried Tonkotsu Kazan Ramen at Novena Square 2, unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me.
The restaurant is best known for its signature “Volcano Ramen” presentation, where the broth is poured into a hot stone bowl and erupts with steam. While the theatrics certainly make for a memorable first impression, I felt that the experience was stronger than the food itself.

The curry broth was mild and lacked the depth and complexity that I usually look for in a good ramen. The noodles were decent with a reasonable bite, but nothing particularly memorable. The chashu was tender enough, though it didn’t stand out from what many other ramen chains in Singapore offer. In fact there was probably too much cabbage and green bell pepper in it, crunchy cabbage, bell pepper and ramen don’t really go well together.
What disappointed me most was that after the initial volcano effect wore off, the bowl felt rather ordinary. The overall flavour profile was safe and approachable, but it didn’t leave me craving another visit.

Portions were also fairly generous, especially if you add the complimentary rice at the end to soak up the remaining broth.
Worth trying once for the volcano ramen experience, but if you’re looking for exceptional ramen, there are stronger options elsewhere in Singapore. The concept is memorable, but the taste itself felt somewhat underwhelming.
