Tucked deeper into the heart of Johor Bahru’s heritage district on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory is a century-old institution. Established in 1919, it’s one of the few bakeries still using a wood-fired oven — the same kind of traditional oven from the early 20th century.
That smoky, slightly charred oven imparts a distinctive aroma and flavour that’s key to Hiap Joo’s charm. We got here on a Friday late morning and saw some people already seated outside the bakery. They informed us the next batch will be ready at 11.45am. Nearer to time, a long queue will start to form but the queue moves quickly because they have a team inside to pack the bakes.
Banana Cake
The banana cake is soft, moist and springy, with a fluffy, airy crumb. It has a gentle sweetness, relying on real Berangan bananas (no artificial banana essence) for its flavour. The exterior has a caramel-brown crust that carries a hint of smokiness from the wood-fired oven. A box of banana cake sells for RM13, making it value for money.
Red Bean Buns
The red bean buns were pretty soft and fluffy. Similar the top exterior of he bun has a slightly crispy crust as it was fresh out of the oven still warm. The bun was quite soft and fluffy and the red bean filling was generous without being overly sweet. Each packet of 6 buns cost RM6.
Verdict
Overall, this banana cake is for those who prefers a light and moist banana cake and it still taste good after keeping it in the fridge overnight. We can definitely tell why Hiap Joo’s banana cake is more than just hype, it’s a piece of JB’s culinary heritage. For anyone traveling across the Causeway, stopping by its old-school bakery for a warm, wood-fired banana cake is a must. The cake’s gentle sweetness, soft texture, and real banana taste make it an ideal comfort food that’s both humble and deeply satisfying.
