Some eateries don’t rely on hype; they simply let their food do the talking. Hai Kah Lang is one of those places beloved by locals, constantly buzzing, and known for serving bowls of seafood goodness that feel both comforting and indulgent at the same time.
First Impressions

We got there on a Friday lunch time and you’ll immediately notice the lively atmosphere: tables filled with steaming bowls, aromas of rich broth lingering in the air, and an unmistakable sense that everyone here came for the same reason – fresh and good quality seafood. There was a display of fresh fish on a bed of ice similar to what you see at the fish monger. The place was packed with a long queue but tables turned quite quickly as we managed to get a table within 25 minutes.
The menu is quite extensive as there are many types of fishes to choose from. We wanted to order the grouper fish soup but the staff told us that the fish meat is chewy and asked if we were ok with it.

The Star: Fish Soup
Hai Kah Lang is best known for its fish soup, and it’s easy to understand why. The broth is clean, not overly salty, not artificial-tasting but naturally sweet with seafood essence. It comes from slow simmering and fresh ingredients.

Inside the bowl, you’ll find chunks of fresh fish. The textures are satisfying and varied, making every bite interesting. Pair that with your choice of noodles, and you’ve got a bowl that feels hearty without being heavy.

Sides & Experience
Beyond the main bowl, we ordered the fried thread fin, which contained probably the off-cuts as it had quite a bit of bones in the fish nuggets. The chili sauce deserves a mention – tangy and just enough heat to cut through the richness of the broth.

Service is efficient despite the crowd, and while the place can be busy (especially peak hours), turnover is fast. Expect a casual, bustling dining vibe, the kind of place where the atmosphere feels as lively as the food.
Final Verdict
If you’re a seafood lover or simply love a comforting bowl of noodles, Hai Kah Lang is worth a visit. Fresh ingredients, flavour-packed broth and a satisfying, soul-warming meal. Although they have been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 3 consecutive years, this is not a fish soup that I would particularly crave for or queue 30 minutes for. This would be good if you want a bowl of fresh quality fish soup.
